Master of the Universe - a Paolozzi sculpture in the gardens of Dean Gallery, Edinburgh

The Dean Gallery actually sits directly across the road from the Modern Art Gallery. The building is over 175 years old and was originally built as an orphan’s hospital. It was converted into a Gallery in 1999. The second floor houses the temporary exhibitions, while the first floor holds Penrose Gallery and the Paolozzi Gallery. These are the galleries that house the permanent collections held by the Dean Gallery.

The Keiller Library is also an integral part of the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh. It contains a vast array of archived material, along with artists books. The Library and the adjoining reading room are open by prior appointment only. The Library focuses on information about 20th and 21st century art and is comprehensive in its scope.

Dean Gallery Edinburgh’s Surroundings

The Dean Gallery sits on a park-like setting and is perfect for outdoor picnics. The Newton Café is another wonderful spot for lunch or tasters. The lunch menu is ever-changing, and the appetizer platters are scrumptious. The Gallery shop is located on the first floor and the merchandise is varied, making it an ideal spot for the discerning shopper, even if on a budget.

Plenty of seating is available in the Gallery. Children are welcome and buggies are available for free. Automobile parking is also free, and handicapped access is available. The attendants that work at the Welcome Desk and those that traverse the grounds are always available to help and answer questions.

The Dean Gallery is also surrounded by an outdoor Sculpture Park. This wonderful park features permanent works by sculptors and is meticulously maintained.

As with all of the National Galleries, admission to the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh is free and open to the public daily from 10-5. Special holiday hours are observed. There may be some charge for special exhibitions. This gallery is well-known for its beauty and accessibility and should not be overlooked while visiting Edinburgh.
